Etihad Airways Takes Flight: My Journey in Data Migration and Web Development

The world of travel is fueled by data, and as a technology enthusiast, I had the privilege of contributing to the digital backbone of Etihad Airways. This experience, facilitated by IBS Software, allowed me to delve into exciting projects that involved both data migration and web development.

Project #1: Sabre Platform Migration and Automation

Etihad Airways was embarking on a critical migration of their ticketing platform to Sabre. My role, as a SQL Server/BI Developer, was to ensure a smooth and efficient transition. This involved:

  • Data Migration: I tackled the complex task of transferring data between disparate databases, like migrating from Oracle 10g to SQL Server. This required understanding the nuances of both platforms and ensuring data integrity throughout the process.

  • Automation with SSIS: Repetitive tasks are a thing of the past! I designed and developed SSIS packages for tasks like ODSeatAvailability and SegmentLimit. These packages leveraged features like reading data from SFTP, XML datasources, multicasting, and pivoting to automate various aspects of data processing.

  • T-SQL Expertise: Leveraging my knowledge of Transact-SQL, I wrote stored procedures and user-defined functions (UDFs) to optimize data manipulation and access within the new platform.

Project #2: Alliance Web Portal

Data migration is just one piece of the puzzle. Etihad Airways also needed a robust system to analyze and visualize key information. Here’s where the ASP.Net/C#/BI Developer side of me came into play:

  • Requirements Gathering and Design: Understanding the business needs was crucial. I worked closely with stakeholders to collect requirements and design a development model and data model for the Alliance Web Portal.

  • Technology Expertise: My knowledge of Business Intelligence tools like SSIS, SSRS, and SQL Server 2008 R2 proved valuable in crafting a data-driven solution. Additionally, my proficiency in ASP.Net and C# enabled the development of a user-friendly web interface.

  • Full-Stack Development: From coding and unit testing to implementing security features, I played a full-stack development role, ensuring the portal’s functionality and secure operations.

  • Project Management: Deadlines are essential in any project. I actively participated in managing project constraints, risks, and timelines, ensuring the portal’s delivery within the set timeframe.

Overall Experience

Working with Etihad Airways was an enriching experience. I honed my skills in data migration, automation, web development, and business intelligence. Witnessing the impact of these projects on Etihad’s smooth operations and data-driven decision-making was truly rewarding.
